Shornur Assembly Election 2026
Shornur Assembly Constituency

Shornur Assembly Constituency is a legislative assembly constituency located in the Palakkad district of Kerala and is a general or unreserved seat. It is the 51st seat out of the 140 seats in the Kerala Legislative Assembly and is one of the seven assembly segments that make up the Palakkad Lok Sabha constituency.

Administrative and Geographical Profile

The Shornur Assembly constituency was established following the delimitation process in 2008. It is made up of a combination of rural and urban areas centered around Shoranur town, a significant rail junction in Kerala and an important transportation hub in the area. It includes Shornur Municipality and Ananganadi, Chalavara, Cherpulasserry, Nellaya, Thrikkadeeri, Vaniyamkulam and Vellinezhi Panchayats in Ottappalam Taluk. Situated on the banks of the Bharathapuzha River, Shoranur town is a major hub for transportation, and trade.

Voter Participation and the Electorate

Shornur has 194287 registered voters for the 2021 Kerala Assembly election. There were 100,430 female electors and 93,857 male electors among them. Kerala has a long history of vigorous democratic involvement, as seen by the high voter turnout in 2021—78.32 percent of the voters exercised their right to vote.

Representation and Political History

The Left Democratic Front (LDF), especially the Communist Party of India (Marxist) [CPI(M)], has made the Shornur Assembly constituency a stronghold since its founding. CPI(M) candidates won the seat in the first two elections following delimitation. In 2011, the first election in this newly created constituency was won by K. S. Saleekha (CPI(M)), signalling the start of left domination and in 2016, P. K. Sasi (CPI(M)) defeated the Indian National Congress opponent to keep the seat. In 2021, after a close race, P. Mammikutty (CPI(M)) won the seat, extending the LDF's uninterrupted rule in Shornur.

Results of the 2021 Kerala Assembly Election

According to official records, P. Mammikutty (CPI(M), LDF) received 74,400 votes in the 2021 Kerala Legislative Assembly election, or roughly 48.98% of all valid votes cast.  T. H. Firoz Babu (Indian National Congress, UDF) came in second with 37,726 votes or around 24.83%. Sandeep Varier (BJP, NDA) also received a noteworthy share with 36,973 votes or around 24.34%, demonstrating the BJP's growing influence. Mammikutty won by a margin of 36,674 votes, or roughly 24.21% of all valid votes cast, confirming the CPI(M)'s hegemony in this constituency. Despite the LDF's continued dominance, Shornur's competitive multiparty environment is demonstrated by the substantial vote shares for both the UDF and NDA candidates.

Socioeconomic Features

The Shornur constituency's economy combines urban and agricultural sources of income. The Bharathapuzha River and its distributaries provide irrigation for traditional farming, particularly the production of paddy, coconuts, and vegetables, in the rural areas. The railway junction serves as a stimulus for employment and business related to logistics, and Shoranur's key transport ties support commerce.

Voter Behaviour and Electoral Dynamics

Shornur has shown a propensity to support left-leaning government through the CPI(M) in the three assembly elections since delimitation, but its electoral dynamics also reflect wider multiparty competition. The UDF, which is mostly dominated by the Indian National Congress in this region, garners sizable vote percentages. The BJP's (NDA) increasing vote share in recent cycles points to potential changes in urban and youth-oriented segments, which is consistent with a pattern observed in some of the constituencies in Kerala.
