History of Politics and Representation
ย
Since the first state elections, Wadakkanchery has had a competitive political history. The Communist Party of India (Marxist) [CPI(M)], which is a part of the Left Democratic Front (LDF), and the Indian National Congress (INC), which is a member of the United Democratic Front (UDF), have primarily switched places over the years. Various parties ran for seats in the early post-independence elections, with varying results, including times when the INC dominated. The INC won numerous victories throughout the 1980s and the 1990s and the beginning of the 2000s, frequently with the help of leaders like V. Balaram and K. S. Narayanan Namboodiri. Under A. C. Moideen, the CPI(M) achieved a significant milestone in 2006, indicating a growing LDF presence. There were hotly contested battles in 2011 and 2016. In 2016, for example, Anil Akkara (INC) defeated the CPI(M) candidate by a slim margin of 43 votes, one of the state's tightest margins of victory.

Kerala Assembly Election Results for 2021

Xavier Chittilappilly from CPI[M], LDF received 81,026 votes, or around 47.7% of the vote, winning the election. He was followed by Anil Akkara, of the Indian National Congress (UDF), with 65,858 votes, or around 38.77 percent. T. S. Ullas Babu, BJP, NDA received 21,747 votes, or about 12.80% of the total. After the fiercely contested 2016 election, Chittilappilly won by a margin of 15,168 votes, highlighting a notable change in favour of the LDF.

Socioeconomic Features

Small businesses, artisan work, retail services, and commerce flourish in the urban wards close to Wadakkanchery town. The main sources of income in the rural areas are agriculture and related pursuits. The contribution of remittances from family members who work outside of Kerala, especially in Gulf nations, also greatly enhances household incomes.

Voter Behaviour and Electoral Dynamics

With deep roots in the Congress-aligned political network, the United Democratic Front (UDF) historically held the seat through the middle of the 20th century and into the early 21st century. Under the leadership of CPI(M), the Left Democratic Front (LDF) has gradually gained support, winning handily in 2021. Although it hasn't yet resulted in a parliamentary victory, the National Democratic Alliance (NDA), and especially the BJP, has witnessed slight increases in vote share, which is consistent with larger patterns of the party's growing support in urban and semi-urban areas.
