Peravoor Assembly Election 2026
Peravoor Assembly Constituency

Located in the Kannur district of northern Kerala, Peravoor is the 16th seat of the Kerala Legislative Assembly. It is a part of the Kannur Lok Sabha constituency in the national parliamentary elections. Peravoor, a general or unreserved seat with a rich political past, was founded in 1977. Although left-leaning candidates have occasionally been successful, it has historically been seen as a Congress-led United Democratic Front (UDF) stronghold. The constituency's socioeconomic background is made up of small towns, agricultural livelihoods, and high levels of civic engagement. It is a mix of rural and semi-urban areas.

Local Governance and Geography

Peravoor, which includes several grama panchayats, is situated in the hilly Kannur district close to the Karnataka border. The Panchayats of Aralam, Ayyankunnu, Kanichar, Keezhur Chavassery, Kelakam, Kottiyoor, Muzhakkunnu, Payam, and Peravoor in Thalassery Taluk comprise the constituency.

Voter turnout and the electorate

Peravoor had 177,249 registered voters, including male, female, and third-gender voters, according to the Election Commission's official statistical report for the 2021 Kerala Assembly election. On election day, 141,734 valid votes were cast, representing an approximate 80.41% voter turnout.

Representation and Political History

Peravoor has a long and interesting political history. The candidates from the Indian National Congress (INC) affiliated to the UDF have retained the seat in several cycles since the constituency's founding in 1977. The Communist Party of India (Marxist) [CPI(M)] had only won once until the most recent elections, in 2006, when K. K. Shailaja Teacher ran from the constituency. Nonetheless, Peravoor has supported the Congress party and its UDF allies for a large portion of its history. In the 1970s and 1980s, K. P. Noorudeen (INC) was elected to several terms. Adv. Sunny Joseph (INC) was elected in 2011, 2016, and 2021, while Prof. A. D. Mustaffa (INC) served as the representative in the early 2000s.

Results of the 2021 Kerala Assembly Election

The Indian National Congress (INC) and the Communist Party of India (Marxist) engaged in a fierce battle in Peravoor during the 2021 Kerala Assembly election. Current Kerala Pradesh Congress Committee (KPCC) president Adv. Sunny Joseph (INC) received 64,784 votes (about 46.93%), narrowly defeating K. V. Sakkeer Hussain (CPI(M)), who received 61,942 votes (around 44.70%), according to official figures from the Election Commission. With 9,155 votes (about 6.44%), BJP candidate Smitha Jayamohan came in third, with the remaining votes going to candidates from the SDPI, independents, and NOTA. Sunny Joseph won the seat by a narrow margin, demonstrating the fierce competition and the UDF and LDF's significant influence in the constituency.

Although the BJP and its allies have historically been less powerful in Peravoor than the UDF and LDF, their 2021 vote share of roughly 6-7% indicates that multiparty competition in the constituency is intensifying.

Socioeconomic Status

The majority of Peravoor is rural, and a large portion of the local economy is derived from agriculture. A large portion of the population is migrant farmers from central and south Kerala who settled in Peravoor and the surrounding areas. In town areas, small-scale commercial and service sectors coexist with the prevalent farming of paddy, rubber, and spices.

Local demographics and socioeconomic situations are impacted by migration for work, particularly to other states and overseas.
