Taliparamba Assembly Election 2026
Taliparamba Assembly Constituency

Situated in the northern region of the state's Kannur district, Taliparamba is number 8 of the 140 seats of the Kerala Legislative Assembly. For national parliamentary elections, Taliparamba is included in the Kannur Lok Sabha constituency. Taliparamba, which was founded in 1965, is made up of both rural gram panchayats and urban municipal areas. It does not have a reservation status.

Administrative and Geographical Profile

The diverse terrain of the Taliparamba constituency includes inland semi-urban and rural areas as well as coastal plains close to the Arabian Sea. It includes the Taliparamba Municipality as well as the Taliparamba Taluk's Chapparapadavu, Kurumathur, Kolacherry, Kuttiattoor, Malapattam, Mayyil, and Pariyaram Panchayats.

Electorate Demographics

Taliparamba had 214,068 registered voters in 2021, with 101,018 men, 113,047 women, and 3 voters of a third gender, according to the Election Commission's official statistics report. Of these, 178,619 people cast ballots, yielding a voter turnout of roughly 83.44%, consistent with Kerala's long history of high voter turnout.  Urban voters, primarily from Taliparamba and Anthoor towns, and rural/agrarian populations in the panchayats make up the constituency's demographic mix.

Representation and Political History

The Left Democratic Front (LDF), especially the Communist Party of India (Marxist) [CPI(M)], has long maintained a stronghold in Taliparamba. Throughout several election cycles, the LDF has maintained a strong presence here, with CPI(M) leaders routinely winning the seat. M. V. Govindan Master (CPI(M)) won the Kerala Legislative Assembly election in 2021, whereas James Mathew (CPI(M)) represented the constituency in the Assembly before him. Trade union activities, agrarian activism, and progressive policy platforms have defined northern Kerala's historical socio-political dynamics, which are reflected in this deeply ingrained left-leaning trend.

Results of the 2021 Legislative Assembly Election

The Kerala State General Secretary of the Communist Party of India (Marxist), M. V. Govindan Master, won the Taliparamba election in 2021 with 92,870 votes, or roughly 52.14% of the total votes cast. Adv. V. P. Abdul Rasheed of the Indian National Congress (INC) came next, receiving 70,181 votes, or around 39.40% of the total. With 13,058 votes (about 7.33%), Gangadharan A. P. of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) came in third. With a resounding 22,689 votes, M. V. Govindan Master won the election overall, confirming the Left Democratic Front's (LDF) robust and ongoing support in the Constituency.

Cultural and Socioeconomic Environment

The constituency consists of economically diverse communities involved in trade, services, small-scale industry, and agriculture. Additionally, a lot of households rely on remittances from family members who work outside, particularly in Gulf countries, which have a significant impact on the local economy. The rich folk traditions of the Malabar region are reflected in Taliparamba's cultural calendar, which features Theyyam and other ceremonial art forms performed during temple festivals and community events.
