Wandoor (Sc) Assembly Election 2026
Wandoor (Sc) Assembly Constituency

Wandoor Assembly Constituency is located in the Malappuram district of Kerala. It is a Scheduled Caste (SC) reserved legislative assembly constituency. It is the 36th out of 140 seats in the Kerala Legislative Assembly. For national parliamentary elections, it is part of the Wayanad Lok Sabha constituency. Major political parties, of the United Democratic Front (UDF) and the Left Democratic Front (LDF), have engaged in steady competition in Wandoor's electoral politics, with the Indian National Congress (INC) continuing to enjoy significant support in recent decades.

Administrative and Geographical Profile

The Wandoor constituency is primarily a rural and semi-urban territory with tiny town centres, forests, and agricultural land that all contribute to its socioeconomic profile. Chokkad, Kalikavu, Karuvarakundu, Mampad, Porur, Thiruvali, Thuvvur and Wandoor Panchayats in Nilambur Taluk are included in this constituency.

Voter Participation and the Electorate

Wandoor had 226,426 registered voters for the 2021 Kerala Legislative Assembly election, with a virtually equal distribution of male and female voters, according to official data from the Kerala Chief Electoral Officer and confirmed election summary. The constituency registered a turnout of almost 75.17% voters in 2021 election.

Representation and Political History

Although the Indian National Congress (INC) has controlled the seat for the majority of its existence, Wandoor has been an active political battlefield since its creation. Vella Eacharan of the INC won the seat with a resounding majority in the first election following delimitation, laying the groundwork for early Congress-aligned politics in the region. The constituency has been represented over the years by INC leaders like Pandalam Sudhakaran and A. P. Anil Kumar, while the Communist Party of India (Marxist) [CPI(M)] has been a frequent opponent, emerging victorious in 1996 when N. Kannan stunned the Congress candidate. A. P. Anil Kumar of the INC has been representing Wandoor since 2001.

Results of the 2021 Kerala Assembly Election

With 87,415 votes and around 51.44% of all valid votes cast, A. P. Anil Kumar of the Indian National Congress (INC) won the Wandoor seat in the 2021 Kerala Legislative Assembly election. P. Mithuna of the Communist Party of India (Marxist) [CPI(M)], who received 71,852 votes (about 42.28% of the total), was his closest opponent. P. C. Vijayan of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), as well as candidates from the Welfare Party of India (WPOI) and other smaller parties, came next. With a victory margin of 15,563 votes, or about 9.17% of the valid ballots cast, the 2021 outcome confirmed the INC's solid standing in Wandoor despite persistent opposition from the Left Front.

ย Voter Behaviour and Electoral Dynamics

With the exception of the CPI(M) victory in 1996, the INC's continued dominance indicates that the UDF has strong organisational roots in the area. Strong community organizations and grassroots networks frequently result in steady voter support for well-known leaders like A. P. Anil Kumar. However, the CPI(M) and other parties have occasionally won sizable vote shares, indicating that voters are still receptive to alternative policy agendas and more comprehensive political narratives.
