Chengalpattu Assembly Election 2026
Chengalpattu Assembly Constituency

Chengalpattu, Constituency No. 32, located on the southern edge of the Chennai Metropolitan Region, is a strategically important assembly constituency that bridges historic town administration and rapid suburban expansion. Known for Chengalpattu Lake, its role as the district headquarters, and its position on the GST Road (NH-45) corridor, the constituency functions as a key gateway to South Tamil Nadu.

Chengalpattu is also noted for its historic fort-town legacy adding cultural depth to its administrative prominence.

Unlike core Chennai seats, Chengalpattu’s political narrative centres on land-use change, infrastructure absorption, water security, and balancing heritage town needs with fast residential growth.

Political & Social Character

The electorate is socially diverse, comprising long-settled town residents, government employees, traders, service-sector workers, peri-urban farmers, and daily commuters to IT and industrial hubs. Voting behaviour reflects a mix of traditional loyalties and performance-based urban expectations.

Geography & Connectivity

Anchored by the GST Road, suburban rail line, and the Chengalpattu railway junction, the constituency is a major transport and commuting hub. However, internal congestion, encroachments, and last-mile connectivity gaps have intensified with rising population density.

Key Hotspots

  • Chengalpattu Lake precinct
  • GST Road junctions
  • Chengalpattu railway station
  • Collectorate and government offices
  • Town market and commercial streets

Core Issues

  • Traffic congestion within town limits
  • Flooding in lake-adjacent and low-lying areas
  • Summer drinking water stress
  • Inadequate underground drainage
  • Encroachments and land-use disputes
  • Solid waste and sanitation gaps
  • Pressure on public healthcare facilities

Voter Mood

Chengalpattu remains a constituency where voters closely judge leadership on administrative coordination, infrastructure delivery, and the ability to manage rapid suburban growth without compromising heritage, water security, and civic stability.

While 22 MLAs from the AIADMK camp led by Edappadi K Palaniswami voted against the government, 25 MLAs from the rebel CV Shanmugam faction backed Vijay. Four Pattali Makkal Katchi MLAs and one BJP legislator abstained from voting. Vijay's Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) government had been formed with support from the Congress, Left parties, VCK and IUML. An AMMK MLA had also extended support before being expelled from the party. The Assembly proceedings witnessed high drama as infighting within the AIADMK spilled into the open. Tensions escalated after the Speaker invited rebel AIADMK leader SP Velumani to speak, triggering protests from the EPS camp, which repeatedly called for unity within the party ahead of the trust vote. Tamil Nadu Government Formation Highlights: DMK congratulates Vijay on forming government in Tamil Nadu

Tamil Nadu Government Formation News Highlights: The uncertainty over government formation in Tamil Nadu has come to an end after the VCK extended unconditional support to the TVK. Moreover, the IUML also extended its support to the Vijay-led party. Earlier in the day, AMMK leader TTV Dhinakaran challenged TVK’s claim of securing his party’s support, demanding the original letter allegedly submitted to the Governor. He said AMMK MLA S Kamraj denied authorising such support and accused TVK of relying on a photocopied document, with a police complaint already filed. Kamraj further dismissed a video released by Vijay-led TVK as AI-generated. Meanwhile, a TVK supporter allegedly attempted self-immolation demanding Vijay become Chief Minister, prompting BJP leader Tamilisai Soundararajan to urge Vijay to calm supporters. Simultaneously, AIADMK MLAs met Edappadi K Palaniswami in Chennai, while Congress legislators remained camped in Hyderabad amid continuing political uncertainty.
