Chepauk Thiruvallikeni Assembly Election 2026
Chepauk Thiruvallikeni Assembly Constituency

Chepauk–Thiruvallikeni, Constituency No 19, is a historic, high-density inner-city Assembly constituency in Central Chennai, known for its religious plurality, cultural legacy, and political prominence. The constituency encompasses the iconic Thiruvallikeni Parthasarathy Temple, Chepauk Palace precincts, Marina-adjacent neighbourhoods, and some of the city’s most densely populated residential pockets.

It also houses key state institutions, including the Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly, Secretariat, and major government departments, along with the world-famous M.A. Chidambaram (Chepauk) Stadium, Vivekananda House, Kasturba Gandhi Hospital, Kalaivaanar Arangam, Queen Mary's and Presidency colleges, and a significant, long Marina coastline stretch, a major attraction. The samadhis of Anna, MGR, Jayalalithaa and Karunanidhi dot the beach.

Chepauk–Thiruvallikeni has a rich political history. M. Karunanidhi won from this constituency three times, while the seat is currently represented by Udhayanidhi Stalin. The area’s symbolic importance is enhanced by its association with governance, culture, sport, and faith.

Political & Social Character:

The electorate is socially, religiously, and occupationally diverse, with Muslim-majority residential clusters, Hindu temple-centred communities, Christian minorities, long-settled families, informal workers, traders, students, and migrants.
Religious institutions, jamaats, temple committees, traders’ bodies, and ward-level leaders play a decisive role in political mobilisation. Electoral behaviour is shaped by community harmony, welfare delivery, housing safety, and civic responsiveness.

Geography & Urban Fabric:

The constituency combines heritage zones, narrow residential lanes, coastal streets, and major arterial roads. While public transport and metro connectivity are strong, internal mobility is constrained by congestion, pedestrian density, and limited emergency access. Coastal proximity exposes certain areas to flooding, saltwater intrusion, and cyclone impact.

Core Civic Issues:

  • Chronic waterlogging and weak stormwater drainage
  • Dilapidated housing and fire safety risks
  • Drinking water supply inconsistency
  • Sanitation and solid waste challenges
  • Congestion during religious festivals and events
  • Overcrowded government schools and hospitals
  • Lack of open and recreational spaces

Voter Mood

Voters favour representatives who show inclusive leadership, constant local presence, and crisis responsiveness in this densely packed, plural constituency.

While 22 MLAs from the AIADMK camp led by Edappadi K Palaniswami voted against the government, 25 MLAs from the rebel CV Shanmugam faction backed Vijay. Four Pattali Makkal Katchi MLAs and one BJP legislator abstained from voting. Vijay's Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) government had been formed with support from the Congress, Left parties, VCK and IUML. An AMMK MLA had also extended support before being expelled from the party. The Assembly proceedings witnessed high drama as infighting within the AIADMK spilled into the open. Tensions escalated after the Speaker invited rebel AIADMK leader SP Velumani to speak, triggering protests from the EPS camp, which repeatedly called for unity within the party ahead of the trust vote. Tamil Nadu Government Formation Highlights: DMK congratulates Vijay on forming government in Tamil Nadu

Tamil Nadu Government Formation News Highlights: The uncertainty over government formation in Tamil Nadu has come to an end after the VCK extended unconditional support to the TVK. Moreover, the IUML also extended its support to the Vijay-led party. Earlier in the day, AMMK leader TTV Dhinakaran challenged TVK’s claim of securing his party’s support, demanding the original letter allegedly submitted to the Governor. He said AMMK MLA S Kamraj denied authorising such support and accused TVK of relying on a photocopied document, with a police complaint already filed. Kamraj further dismissed a video released by Vijay-led TVK as AI-generated. Meanwhile, a TVK supporter allegedly attempted self-immolation demanding Vijay become Chief Minister, prompting BJP leader Tamilisai Soundararajan to urge Vijay to calm supporters. Simultaneously, AIADMK MLAs met Edappadi K Palaniswami in Chennai, while Congress legislators remained camped in Hyderabad amid continuing political uncertainty.
