Dr.Radhakrishnan Nagar Assembly Election Results 2026

Dr.Radhakrishnan Nagar Assembly Election 2026
Dr.Radhakrishnan Nagar Assembly Constituency

Dr. Radhakrishnan Nagar, Constituency No 11, commonly known as R.K. Nagar, is a densely populated coastal assembly constituency in North Chennai, characterised by fishing settlements, port-linked labour colonies, informal housing clusters, and high dependence on welfare delivery.

Politically, the constituency drew national attention when former Chief Minister J. Jayalalithaa was elected MLA in 2015–16. Following her demise, the by-election saw TTV Dhinakaran win as an Independent amid allegations of cash-for-votes, cementing R.K. Nagar’s image as a high-stakes, closely watched seat. The polls scheduled on earlier date was countermanded for that reason by the EC. TTV is now in NDA.

Political & Social Character

Politically, R.K. Nagar has a predominantly working-class electorate comprising traditional fisher communities, port and dock workers, logistics labour, street vendors, small traders, and large sections of urban poor living in dense habitations. Caste and occupational identities matter, but welfare access, ration stability, and crisis response play a decisive role in voting behaviour.

Geography & Connectivity

The constituency is marked by narrow streets, coastal roads, port-adjacent industrial zones, and overcrowded residential clusters. While bus connectivity to North and Central Chennai is strong, internal road quality and emergency access remain weak. Coastal zones focus on fishing rights, housing security, and erosion control.

While 22 MLAs from the AIADMK camp led by Edappadi K Palaniswami voted against the government, 25 MLAs from the rebel CV Shanmugam faction backed Vijay. Four Pattali Makkal Katchi MLAs and one BJP legislator abstained from voting. Vijay's Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) government had been formed with support from the Congress, Left parties, VCK and IUML. An AMMK MLA had also extended support before being expelled from the party. The Assembly proceedings witnessed high drama as infighting within the AIADMK spilled into the open. Tensions escalated after the Speaker invited rebel AIADMK leader SP Velumani to speak, triggering protests from the EPS camp, which repeatedly called for unity within the party ahead of the trust vote. Tamil Nadu Government Formation Highlights: DMK congratulates Vijay on forming government in Tamil Nadu

Tamil Nadu Government Formation News Highlights: The uncertainty over government formation in Tamil Nadu has come to an end after the VCK extended unconditional support to the TVK. Moreover, the IUML also extended its support to the Vijay-led party. Earlier in the day, AMMK leader TTV Dhinakaran challenged TVK’s claim of securing his party’s support, demanding the original letter allegedly submitted to the Governor. He said AMMK MLA S Kamraj denied authorising such support and accused TVK of relying on a photocopied document, with a police complaint already filed. Kamraj further dismissed a video released by Vijay-led TVK as AI-generated. Meanwhile, a TVK supporter allegedly attempted self-immolation demanding Vijay become Chief Minister, prompting BJP leader Tamilisai Soundararajan to urge Vijay to calm supporters. Simultaneously, AIADMK MLAs met Edappadi K Palaniswami in Chennai, while Congress legislators remained camped in Hyderabad amid continuing political uncertainty.
