Cheyyur Assembly Election 2026
Cheyyur Assembly Constituency

Cheyyur, Constituency No. 34, located along the southern coastal stretch of Chengalpattu district, is a predominantly rural assembly constituency shaped by agriculture, fishing livelihoods, and dispersed village settlements. Formed after the 2008 delimitation, the constituency lies outside Tamil Nadu’s high-growth corridors and reflects the challenges of the coastal–agrarian belt, where water security, basic infrastructure, and livelihood stability dominate public concerns.
Unlike suburban seats, Cheyyur’s political narrative centres on service delivery, welfare implementation, coastal economy protection, and climate resilience.

Political & Social Character

The electorate comprises farmers, agricultural labourers, fisherfolk, dairy households, small traders, and welfare beneficiaries. Village and caste networks strongly influence voting behaviour, with MLA accessibility and crisis response—especially during cyclones, floods, and coastal erosion—playing a decisive role in voter trust.

Geography & Connectivity

The constituency spans coastal fishing hamlets along the Bay of Bengal, tank-fed agricultural villages, dryland interiors, and interior panchayats. Connectivity relies on state highways and limited bus services, while interior roads and coastal access routes remain uneven, affecting markets and emergency response.

Key Hotspots

  • Coastal fishing villages
  • Cheyyur town centre
  • Irrigation tanks and channels
  • Panchayat union roads
  • Markets and bus stands

Core Issues

  • Irregular irrigation and tank maintenance
  • Coastal erosion and livelihood vulnerability
  • Drinking water scarcity and salinity intrusion
  • Poor interior road connectivity
  • Limited government healthcare facilities
  • Inadequate fish landing and storage infrastructure
  • Delays in welfare delivery

Voter Mood

  • Faster welfare grievance redressal
  • Climate-resilient housing initiatives
  • Cheyyur remains a constituency where governance is judged by everyday service delivery, crisis response, and the ability to protect fragile coastal and agrarian livelihoods

Tamil Nadu CM Floor Test Highlights: Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Vijay comfortably won the floor test on Wednesday, securing support from 144 MLAs after the DMK staged a walkout, bringing down the effective majority mark to 88 from 117. While 22 MLAs from the AIADMK camp led by Edappadi K Palaniswami voted against the government, 25 MLAs from the rebel CV Shanmugam faction backed Vijay. Four Pattali Makkal Katchi MLAs and one BJP legislator abstained from voting. Vijay's Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) government had been formed with support from the Congress, Left parties, VCK and IUML. An AMMK MLA had also extended support before being expelled from the party. The Assembly proceedings witnessed high drama as infighting within the AIADMK spilled into the open. Tensions escalated after the Speaker invited rebel AIADMK leader SP Velumani to speak, triggering protests from the EPS camp, which repeatedly called for unity within the party ahead of the trust vote. Tamil Nadu Government Formation Highlights: DMK congratulates Vijay on forming government in Tamil Nadu

Tamil Nadu Government Formation News Highlights: The uncertainty over government formation in Tamil Nadu has come to an end after the VCK extended unconditional support to the TVK. Moreover, the IUML also extended its support to the Vijay-led party. Earlier in the day, AMMK leader TTV Dhinakaran challenged TVK’s claim of securing his party’s support, demanding the original letter allegedly submitted to the Governor. He said AMMK MLA S Kamraj denied authorising such support and accused TVK of relying on a photocopied document, with a police complaint already filed. Kamraj further dismissed a video released by Vijay-led TVK as AI-generated. Meanwhile, a TVK supporter allegedly attempted self-immolation demanding Vijay become Chief Minister, prompting BJP leader Tamilisai Soundararajan to urge Vijay to calm supporters. Simultaneously, AIADMK MLAs met Edappadi K Palaniswami in Chennai, while Congress legislators remained camped in Hyderabad amid continuing political uncertainty.
