Mylapore Assembly Election 2026
Mylapore Assembly Constituency

Mylapore ( Constituency no 25), one of Chennai’s oldest and most culturally distinctive assembly constituencies, represents a unique blend of heritage, religious life, high-density residential neighbourhoods, and active commercial corridors. Mylapore is believed to be the birth place of Thiruvalluvar.

Anchored by the historic Kapaleeshwarar Temple and a network of traditional agraharams, cultural institutions, and educational centres, Mylapore is often referred to as the “town of temples”, where civic governance is closely intertwined with heritage preservation, festival management, and quality-of-life concerns.
The constituency faces the challenge of managing dense urban living within a historic fabric, requiring sensitive leadership that balances modern infrastructure needs with cultural and religious continuity.

Political & Social Character

Politically, Mylapore consists largely of long-settled middle- and upper-middle-class families, professionals, traders, temple-linked communities, students, and service workers. Caste influence is subtle, with voting behaviour shaped more by cultural identity, civic services, and governance outcomes. Residents’ associations, temple committees, cultural organisations, and traders’ bodies play an influential role in public opinion.

Geography & Connectivity

Mylapore’s geography is compact and densely built, with narrow streets originally designed for pedestrian and temple use now carrying heavy vehicular traffic. The constituency connects well to Triplicane, T. Nagar, Alwarpet, and Adyar through arterial roads and bus routes, with metro access improving regional mobility. Traffic congestion, parking shortages, and pedestrian safety are persistent issues, especially during temple festivals and cultural events. Low-lying pockets remain vulnerable to flooding during heavy rains.

Tamil Nadu CM Floor Test Highlights: Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Vijay comfortably won the floor test on Wednesday, securing support from 144 MLAs after the DMK staged a walkout, bringing down the effective majority mark to 88 from 117. While 22 MLAs from the AIADMK camp led by Edappadi K Palaniswami voted against the government, 25 MLAs from the rebel CV Shanmugam faction backed Vijay. Four Pattali Makkal Katchi MLAs and one BJP legislator abstained from voting. Vijay's Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) government had been formed with support from the Congress, Left parties, VCK and IUML. An AMMK MLA had also extended support before being expelled from the party. The Assembly proceedings witnessed high drama as infighting within the AIADMK spilled into the open. Tensions escalated after the Speaker invited rebel AIADMK leader SP Velumani to speak, triggering protests from the EPS camp, which repeatedly called for unity within the party ahead of the trust vote. Tamil Nadu Government Formation Highlights: DMK congratulates Vijay on forming government in Tamil Nadu

Tamil Nadu Government Formation News Highlights: The uncertainty over government formation in Tamil Nadu has come to an end after the VCK extended unconditional support to the TVK. Moreover, the IUML also extended its support to the Vijay-led party. Earlier in the day, AMMK leader TTV Dhinakaran challenged TVK’s claim of securing his party’s support, demanding the original letter allegedly submitted to the Governor. He said AMMK MLA S Kamraj denied authorising such support and accused TVK of relying on a photocopied document, with a police complaint already filed. Kamraj further dismissed a video released by Vijay-led TVK as AI-generated. Meanwhile, a TVK supporter allegedly attempted self-immolation demanding Vijay become Chief Minister, prompting BJP leader Tamilisai Soundararajan to urge Vijay to calm supporters. Simultaneously, AIADMK MLAs met Edappadi K Palaniswami in Chennai, while Congress legislators remained camped in Hyderabad amid continuing political uncertainty.
