Egmore Assembly Election 2026
Egmore Assembly Constituency

Egmore, Constituency No 16, is a core inner-city Assembly constituency in Central Chennai, defined by its institutional concentration, heritage character, and very high daily floating population. It functions as one of Chennai’s key administrative and service backbones rather than a purely residential seat. The constituency houses major landmarks such as the Government Museum, Connemara Public Library, and the Mayor Radhakrishnan Hockey Stadium, along with prominent hospitals, courts, hotels and transport hubs. The Egmore Railway station is a key landmark, a colonial legacy structure.

Political & Social Character:

The electorate includes long-settled residents, service-sector employees, traders, hospitality workers, medical and legal professionals, government staff, migrants and informal workers. Voting behaviour is driven less by caste blocs and more by urban governance performance, access to services, and crisis management. Professional bodies, trader associations, institutions and RWAs play a stronger role than traditional caste networks.

Geography & Connectivity:

Egmore is among Chennai’s best-connected areas, anchored by Egmore Railway Station, metro rail access and dense bus networks. Heavy arterial road traffic and a large daytime population inflow place severe pressure on roads, sanitation, water supply and policing, leading to congestion and pedestrian safety concerns.

Core Issues:

  • Severe traffic congestion and pedestrian safety risks
  • Overstretched drainage and sanitation systems
  • Drinking water stress due to floating population
  • Parking shortages and encroachments
  • Noise and air pollution
  • Maintenance of ageing heritage structures
  • Overcrowded government hospitals and offices

Voter Mood:

  • Voters reward leaders who show administrative competence, strong inter-agency coordination, and visible improvements in everyday urban functionality.

Tamil Nadu CM Floor Test Highlights: Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Vijay comfortably won the floor test on Wednesday, securing support from 144 MLAs after the DMK staged a walkout, bringing down the effective majority mark to 88 from 117. While 22 MLAs from the AIADMK camp led by Edappadi K Palaniswami voted against the government, 25 MLAs from the rebel CV Shanmugam faction backed Vijay. Four Pattali Makkal Katchi MLAs and one BJP legislator abstained from voting. Vijay's Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) government had been formed with support from the Congress, Left parties, VCK and IUML. An AMMK MLA had also extended support before being expelled from the party. The Assembly proceedings witnessed high drama as infighting within the AIADMK spilled into the open. Tensions escalated after the Speaker invited rebel AIADMK leader SP Velumani to speak, triggering protests from the EPS camp, which repeatedly called for unity within the party ahead of the trust vote. Tamil Nadu Government Formation Highlights: DMK congratulates Vijay on forming government in Tamil Nadu

Tamil Nadu Government Formation News Highlights: The uncertainty over government formation in Tamil Nadu has come to an end after the VCK extended unconditional support to the TVK. Moreover, the IUML also extended its support to the Vijay-led party. Earlier in the day, AMMK leader TTV Dhinakaran challenged TVK’s claim of securing his party’s support, demanding the original letter allegedly submitted to the Governor. He said AMMK MLA S Kamraj denied authorising such support and accused TVK of relying on a photocopied document, with a police complaint already filed. Kamraj further dismissed a video released by Vijay-led TVK as AI-generated. Meanwhile, a TVK supporter allegedly attempted self-immolation demanding Vijay become Chief Minister, prompting BJP leader Tamilisai Soundararajan to urge Vijay to calm supporters. Simultaneously, AIADMK MLAs met Edappadi K Palaniswami in Chennai, while Congress legislators remained camped in Hyderabad amid continuing political uncertainty.
