Kancheepuram Assembly Election 2026
Kancheepuram Assembly Constituency

Kancheepuram (Constituency no 37), one of Tamil Nadu’s most historically significant cities, is a heritage-driven urban assembly constituency where temples, silk weaving, and dense residential life intersect. Globally known as the “City of Thousand Temples” and for its world-renowned Kancheepuram silk sarees, the constituency blends pilgrimage economy with everyday civic challenges.

Kancheepuram is home to iconic temples such as Ekambareswarar (one of the oldest temples), Kamakshi Amman, Varadaraja Perumal and Ulagalandha Perumal (both Divya Desams), along with the revered Kanchipuram Sankara Mutt.

Aththi Varadar darshan, held once in 40 years at the Varadaraja Perumal Temple draws millions of devotees. The city is revered as 'Nagareshu Kanchi' in lore.

It city also holds political significance as the birthplace of C.N. Annadurai, founder of the DMK and former Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu. He won in Kancheepuram in 1957.

Political & Social Character

The electorate is socially layered, comprising temple-linked communities, silk weavers, traders, government employees, urban poor, students, and tourism-dependent workers. While caste and occupational networks—especially among weavers—remain influential, urban service delivery, infrastructure, and livelihood security increasingly shape voter behaviour. Weavers’ associations, temple committees, traders’ bodies, and residents’ welfare groups actively shape public discourse.

Geography & Connectivity

Though well connected to Chennai by road and rail, internal congestion on narrow heritage streets remains a major issue. The Vegavathi river and temple tanks play a crucial role in drainage and flood management.

Key Hotspots

  • Major temple precincts
  • Silk weaving streets
  • Town market and commercial zones
  • Vegavathi river and temple tanks
  • Bus stand and railway station areas

Core Issues

  • Traffic congestion and lack of parking
  • Monsoon flooding and drainage constraints
  • Summer drinking water shortages
  • Decline of traditional silk weaving
  • Sanitation stress during festival seasons
  • Encroachments around water bodies

Voter Mood

  • Weavers seek livelihood protection, subsidies, housing, and market access
  • Residents prioritise drainage, water supply, and road maintenance
  • Traders demand parking, sanitation, and crowd management
  • Women emphasise water, healthcare, and safety
  • Elderly and pilgrims value walkability and public amenities

Kancheepuram remains a constituency where faith, fabric, history, and governance are inseparably linked.

While 22 MLAs from the AIADMK camp led by Edappadi K Palaniswami voted against the government, 25 MLAs from the rebel CV Shanmugam faction backed Vijay. Four Pattali Makkal Katchi MLAs and one BJP legislator abstained from voting. Vijay's Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) government had been formed with support from the Congress, Left parties, VCK and IUML. An AMMK MLA had also extended support before being expelled from the party. The Assembly proceedings witnessed high drama as infighting within the AIADMK spilled into the open. Tensions escalated after the Speaker invited rebel AIADMK leader SP Velumani to speak, triggering protests from the EPS camp, which repeatedly called for unity within the party ahead of the trust vote. Tamil Nadu Government Formation Highlights: DMK congratulates Vijay on forming government in Tamil Nadu

Tamil Nadu Government Formation News Highlights: The uncertainty over government formation in Tamil Nadu has come to an end after the VCK extended unconditional support to the TVK. Moreover, the IUML also extended its support to the Vijay-led party. Earlier in the day, AMMK leader TTV Dhinakaran challenged TVK’s claim of securing his party’s support, demanding the original letter allegedly submitted to the Governor. He said AMMK MLA S Kamraj denied authorising such support and accused TVK of relying on a photocopied document, with a police complaint already filed. Kamraj further dismissed a video released by Vijay-led TVK as AI-generated. Meanwhile, a TVK supporter allegedly attempted self-immolation demanding Vijay become Chief Minister, prompting BJP leader Tamilisai Soundararajan to urge Vijay to calm supporters. Simultaneously, AIADMK MLAs met Edappadi K Palaniswami in Chennai, while Congress legislators remained camped in Hyderabad amid continuing political uncertainty.
