Alandur Assembly Constituency

Alandur, in Chennai district (Constituency No. 28), is among Tamil Nadu’s most urbanised and rapidly growing regions. Located close to the city’s core, the constituency blends an old administrative legacy with infrastructure-driven progress. Once a largely residential zone with strong civic engagement, it has evolved into a commercial hub shaped by road expansion, IT corridors, and airport-centric development.

Historical & Political Significance
The region carries notable political weight. When it was known as the St. Thomas Mount Assembly Constituency, former Chief Minister M.G. Ramachandran (MGR) won from here in 1967 and 1971, leaving a lasting imprint on Tamil Nadu’s political history.

Geography & Connectivity
The Adyar River forms the northern boundary, defining a flat coastal landscape that supports both residential and business areas. The presence of the Chennai International Airport has turned Alandur into a key transit and commercial centre. The Alandur Metro Interchange Station, among the largest in the city, further strengthens connectivity and economic activity.

Key Neighbourhoods
The constituency covers St. Thomas Mount, Nanganallur, Adambakkam, Meenambakkam, the Guindy industrial belt, and parts of the former Alandur municipality. Each area has its own cultural and economic role. While the service sector benefits from proximity to IT corridors and industrial estates, established middle-class communities continue to anchor the region with civic participation and reputed educational institutions.

Often said that if the Ripon Building is the “Father of the Corporation,” Alandur can be called its “Mother.” With metro expansion, airport modernisation, and growing commercial activity shaping its trajectory, Alandur today stands as one of Chennai’s most dynamic and evolving assembly constituencies.

Tamil Nadu CM Floor Test Highlights: Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Vijay comfortably won the floor test on Wednesday, securing support from 144 MLAs after the DMK staged a walkout, bringing down the effective majority mark to 88 from 117. While 22 MLAs from the AIADMK camp led by Edappadi K Palaniswami voted against the government, 25 MLAs from the rebel CV Shanmugam faction backed Vijay. Four Pattali Makkal Katchi MLAs and one BJP legislator abstained from voting. Vijay's Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) government had been formed with support from the Congress, Left parties, VCK and IUML. An AMMK MLA had also extended support before being expelled from the party. The Assembly proceedings witnessed high drama as infighting within the AIADMK spilled into the open. Tensions escalated after the Speaker invited rebel AIADMK leader SP Velumani to speak, triggering protests from the EPS camp, which repeatedly called for unity within the party ahead of the trust vote. Tamil Nadu Government Formation Highlights: DMK congratulates Vijay on forming government in Tamil Nadu

Tamil Nadu Government Formation News Highlights: The uncertainty over government formation in Tamil Nadu has come to an end after the VCK extended unconditional support to the TVK. Moreover, the IUML also extended its support to the Vijay-led party. Earlier in the day, AMMK leader TTV Dhinakaran challenged TVK’s claim of securing his party’s support, demanding the original letter allegedly submitted to the Governor. He said AMMK MLA S Kamraj denied authorising such support and accused TVK of relying on a photocopied document, with a police complaint already filed. Kamraj further dismissed a video released by Vijay-led TVK as AI-generated. Meanwhile, a TVK supporter allegedly attempted self-immolation demanding Vijay become Chief Minister, prompting BJP leader Tamilisai Soundararajan to urge Vijay to calm supporters. Simultaneously, AIADMK MLAs met Edappadi K Palaniswami in Chennai, while Congress legislators remained camped in Hyderabad amid continuing political uncertainty.
