Velachery Assembly Election Results 2026

Live Results

Velachery Assembly Constituency

Velachery (Constituency number 26), located in south Chennai, is a high-density, rapidly transformed urban assembly constituency shaped by IT-driven growth, large residential layouts, commercial complexes, and chronic infrastructure stress.

Once a peripheral suburb, Velachery has evolved into a key residential and transit zone linking Guindy, Taramani, Perungudi, and the OMR–IT corridor, making it one of Chennai’s most electorally visible urban seats. It is also one of the most flood-prone areas in Chennai, where even a brief spell of heavy rain can result in waterlogged roads and submerged streets, often necessitating the use of boats during monsoon floods.

Political & Social Character

Velachery has a diverse urban electorate comprising IT professionals, salaried employees, small business owners, migrants, apartment residents, slum rehabilitation communities, and welfare beneficiaries. Caste influence is relatively muted, with voting behaviour largely driven by civic performance, housing conditions, and service delivery.

Hotspots

  • Dhandeeswaram temple is a popular place of worship
  • Velachery lake
  • Phoenix mall
  • Velachery market

CORE ISSUES

  • Severe monsoon flooding and waterlogging, making roads almost impassable in heavy rain
  • Inadequate stormwater drainage and obstructed natural channels
  • Traffic congestion, poor road surfaces, and lack of pedestrian infrastructure
  • Drinking water stress, solid waste management, and sewage overflow
  • Encroachment on water bodies and drains, delaying flood mitigation

Voter Mood

Voters are highly reactive to monsoon performance and expect visible year-round infrastructure maintenance. They are highly issue-aware and judge representatives on crisis response and long-term civic solutions.

Tamil Nadu CM Floor Test Highlights: Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Vijay comfortably won the floor test on Wednesday, securing support from 144 MLAs after the DMK staged a walkout, bringing down the effective majority mark to 88 from 117. While 22 MLAs from the AIADMK camp led by Edappadi K Palaniswami voted against the government, 25 MLAs from the rebel CV Shanmugam faction backed Vijay. Four Pattali Makkal Katchi MLAs and one BJP legislator abstained from voting. Vijay's Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) government had been formed with support from the Congress, Left parties, VCK and IUML. An AMMK MLA had also extended support before being expelled from the party. The Assembly proceedings witnessed high drama as infighting within the AIADMK spilled into the open. Tensions escalated after the Speaker invited rebel AIADMK leader SP Velumani to speak, triggering protests from the EPS camp, which repeatedly called for unity within the party ahead of the trust vote. Tamil Nadu Government Formation Highlights: DMK congratulates Vijay on forming government in Tamil Nadu

Tamil Nadu Government Formation News Highlights: The uncertainty over government formation in Tamil Nadu has come to an end after the VCK extended unconditional support to the TVK. Moreover, the IUML also extended its support to the Vijay-led party. Earlier in the day, AMMK leader TTV Dhinakaran challenged TVK’s claim of securing his party’s support, demanding the original letter allegedly submitted to the Governor. He said AMMK MLA S Kamraj denied authorising such support and accused TVK of relying on a photocopied document, with a police complaint already filed. Kamraj further dismissed a video released by Vijay-led TVK as AI-generated. Meanwhile, a TVK supporter allegedly attempted self-immolation demanding Vijay become Chief Minister, prompting BJP leader Tamilisai Soundararajan to urge Vijay to calm supporters. Simultaneously, AIADMK MLAs met Edappadi K Palaniswami in Chennai, while Congress legislators remained camped in Hyderabad amid continuing political uncertainty.
