Villivakkam Assembly Constituency

Villivakkam, Constituency No 14, is a mixed residential–industrial Assembly constituency in North–Central Chennai, shaped by its railway legacy, working-class neighbourhoods, and growing middle-class pockets. Historically linked to railways, small manufacturing and organised labour, it reflects Chennai’s transition from an industrial to a service-driven economy, while continuing to face stress from ageing urban infrastructure.

The constituency also has cultural and historical significance, with the Agatheeswarar Temple and a British-era weekly market that continues to function even today.

Political & Social Character:

Villivakkam’s electorate is socially diverse, comprising railway employees, industrial and construction workers, salaried middle- and lower-income households, small traders, informal workers, and migrants. While caste and community networks matter, voting behaviour is increasingly shaped by day-to-day civic performance. RWAs, trade unions, market associations and ward-level leaders play a role in mobilisation.

Geography & Connectivity:

The constituency is organised around Villivakkam railway station, major road corridors and dense residential clusters. Rail connectivity is central to daily commuting, supported by strong bus networks. However, traffic congestion near railway crossings, uneven roads and monsoon waterlogging remain persistent challenges.

Core Issues:

  • Chronic waterlogging and drainage gaps
  • Poor interior roads and footpaths
  • Inconsistent drinking water supply
  • Traffic congestion near railway crossings
  • Waste management inefficiencies
  • Overcrowded government schools and hospitals
  • Noise and pollution near rail and industrial zones

Voter Mood:

  • Working-class families: drainage, water and healthcare
  • Middle class: roads, traffic, cleanliness
  • Women: safety, lighting and sanitation
  • Youth: employment stability and skill training
  • Elderly: healthcare access and transport convenience
  • Voters increasingly reward visible problem-solving, quick grievance redressal, and effective coordination with municipal and railway authorities.

While 22 MLAs from the AIADMK camp led by Edappadi K Palaniswami voted against the government, 25 MLAs from the rebel CV Shanmugam faction backed Vijay. Four Pattali Makkal Katchi MLAs and one BJP legislator abstained from voting. Vijay's Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) government had been formed with support from the Congress, Left parties, VCK and IUML. An AMMK MLA had also extended support before being expelled from the party. The Assembly proceedings witnessed high drama as infighting within the AIADMK spilled into the open. Tensions escalated after the Speaker invited rebel AIADMK leader SP Velumani to speak, triggering protests from the EPS camp, which repeatedly called for unity within the party ahead of the trust vote. Tamil Nadu Government Formation Highlights: DMK congratulates Vijay on forming government in Tamil Nadu

Tamil Nadu Government Formation News Highlights: The uncertainty over government formation in Tamil Nadu has come to an end after the VCK extended unconditional support to the TVK. Moreover, the IUML also extended its support to the Vijay-led party. Earlier in the day, AMMK leader TTV Dhinakaran challenged TVK’s claim of securing his party’s support, demanding the original letter allegedly submitted to the Governor. He said AMMK MLA S Kamraj denied authorising such support and accused TVK of relying on a photocopied document, with a police complaint already filed. Kamraj further dismissed a video released by Vijay-led TVK as AI-generated. Meanwhile, a TVK supporter allegedly attempted self-immolation demanding Vijay become Chief Minister, prompting BJP leader Tamilisai Soundararajan to urge Vijay to calm supporters. Simultaneously, AIADMK MLAs met Edappadi K Palaniswami in Chennai, while Congress legislators remained camped in Hyderabad amid continuing political uncertainty.
