Kolathur Assembly Constituency

Kolathur, Constituency No 13, is the assembly constituency from which DMK President and Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K. Stalin has been elected in three consecutive Assembly elections—2011, 2016, and 2021, giving the seat high political significance in Chennai and the State itself.

A high-density mixed residential–commercial constituency, Kolathur lies between Perambur, Villivakkam, and Madhavaram. Once semi-industrial, it has rapidly transformed into a crowded urban residential hub with expanding apartment clusters, placing severe pressure on civic infrastructure. Unlike traditional working-class seats, Kolathur political narrative is driven by urban service delivery, flood resilience, and quality-of-life governance.

Political & Social Character:

Kolathur has a socially diverse electorate comprising lower- and middle-income families, private-sector employees, small traders, informal workers, migrants, and apartment residents. While caste influence exists, resident welfare associations, apartment bodies, and street-level leaders increasingly shape political opinion.

Geography & Connectivity:

The constituency consists of dense residential layouts, apartment belts, commercial corridors, and limited industrial remnants. It has good road and bus connectivity to surrounding areas, but narrow interior roads, traffic congestion, and poor drainage remain chronic problems.

Core Issues:

Key concerns include severe monsoon flooding, inadequate stormwater drainage, summer water shortages, traffic congestion, poor interior roads, waste management gaps, and lack of open spaces. Expanded issues involve drainage encroachments, ageing sewer systems, pressure on schools and hospitals, pedestrian safety, pollution, and weak grievance redressal.

Voter Mood:

Kolathur is an issue-driven, performance-oriented urban constituency with strong resident association influence. Families prioritise flood control and water reliability, traders demand parking solutions, women stress safety and sanitation, youth seek public spaces, and the elderly value walkability and healthcare access. Voters reward representatives who are visible, responsive, and effective in coordinating civic agencies.

Tamil Nadu Floor Test Highlights: Vijay sails through Tamil Nadu trust vote; 5 MLAs abstain

Tamil Nadu CM Floor Test Highlights: Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Vijay comfortably won the floor test on Wednesday, securing support from 144 MLAs after the DMK staged a walkout, bringing down the effective majority mark to 88 from 117. While 22 MLAs from the AIADMK camp led by Edappadi K Palaniswami voted against the government, 25 MLAs from the rebel CV Shanmugam faction backed Vijay. Four Pattali Makkal Katchi MLAs and one BJP legislator abstained from voting. Vijay's Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) government had been formed with support from the Congress, Left parties, VCK and IUML. An AMMK MLA had also extended support before being expelled from the party. The Assembly proceedings witnessed high drama as infighting within the AIADMK spilled into the open. Tensions escalated after the Speaker invited rebel AIADMK leader SP Velumani to speak, triggering protests from the EPS camp, which repeatedly called for unity within the party ahead of the trust vote.
