Sriperumbudur Assembly Constituency

Sriperumbudur, Constituency No. 29, in western Kanchipuram district within the Chennai Metropolitan Region, is a strategically vital industrial–peri-urban constituency. Internationally recognised as an automobile and electronics manufacturing hub, it represents Tamil Nadu’s industrial ambitions alongside the challenges of villages transitioning from agrarian livelihoods to factory-linked economies.

Sriperumbudur also holds deep historical and spiritual significance. It is the birthplace of Vaishnavite seer Sri Ramanujar, with the Adhikesava Perumal Temple housing a shrine dedicated to him. The constituency is also home to the Rajiv Gandhi Memorial, marking the site where former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi was assassinated in May 1991.

Political & Social Profile

The electorate comprises industrial and contract workers, engineers, small traders, farmers, and long-settled village communities. Caste networks influence village-level politics, while employment security, welfare delivery, and local access to industrial jobs shape voting in industrial belts. The MLA is expected to mediate between industries, workers, villages, and the state.

Geography & Connectivity

The constituency includes SIPCOT industrial estates, highway corridors, growing townships, and residual agricultural pockets. Connectivity is a major advantage with NH48 (Chennai–Bengaluru Highway) and the Outer Ring Road, though interior village roads, public transport frequency, and last-mile access remain weak.

Core Issues

  • Limited local employment for village youth
  • Inadequate public transport for shift workers
  • Drinking water scarcity and groundwater depletion
  • Poor interior road conditions
  • Industrial pollution and environmental stress
  • Worker housing shortages
  • Gaps in government healthcare facilities

Voter Mood

  • Workers seek job security, transport, and housing
  • Villagers prioritise water, roads, and fair land compensation
  • Youth demand skill training linked to nearby factories
  • Women workers emphasise safety, transport, and healthcare

Voters expect industrial growth to translate into visible local benefits like employment, with strong focus on skills, water security, transport, healthcare, environmental regulation, and balanced industrial–rural development.

While 22 MLAs from the AIADMK camp led by Edappadi K Palaniswami voted against the government, 25 MLAs from the rebel CV Shanmugam faction backed Vijay. Four Pattali Makkal Katchi MLAs and one BJP legislator abstained from voting. Vijay's Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) government had been formed with support from the Congress, Left parties, VCK and IUML. An AMMK MLA had also extended support before being expelled from the party. The Assembly proceedings witnessed high drama as infighting within the AIADMK spilled into the open. Tensions escalated after the Speaker invited rebel AIADMK leader SP Velumani to speak, triggering protests from the EPS camp, which repeatedly called for unity within the party ahead of the trust vote. Tamil Nadu Government Formation Highlights: DMK congratulates Vijay on forming government in Tamil Nadu

Tamil Nadu Government Formation News Highlights: The uncertainty over government formation in Tamil Nadu has come to an end after the VCK extended unconditional support to the TVK. Moreover, the IUML also extended its support to the Vijay-led party. Earlier in the day, AMMK leader TTV Dhinakaran challenged TVK’s claim of securing his party’s support, demanding the original letter allegedly submitted to the Governor. He said AMMK MLA S Kamraj denied authorising such support and accused TVK of relying on a photocopied document, with a police complaint already filed. Kamraj further dismissed a video released by Vijay-led TVK as AI-generated. Meanwhile, a TVK supporter allegedly attempted self-immolation demanding Vijay become Chief Minister, prompting BJP leader Tamilisai Soundararajan to urge Vijay to calm supporters. Simultaneously, AIADMK MLAs met Edappadi K Palaniswami in Chennai, while Congress legislators remained camped in Hyderabad amid continuing political uncertainty.
