Thiruvottiyur Assembly Constituency

Thiruvottiyur, Constituency No 10, is a densely populated urban–industrial assembly constituency in North Chennai, located along the Bay of Bengal. Shaped by port-linked activity, traditional fishing livelihoods, and working-class neighbourhoods, it is known for the historic Thyagaraja Temple and its proximity to Chennai and Ennore ports and major industrial belts. The constituency blends cultural heritage with heavy industrial pressure, making environmental and livelihood issues central to its politics.

Political & Social Character:

Thiruvottiyur has a socially diverse electorate that includes fisherfolk, industrial and port workers, small traders, urban poor settlements, middle-income families, and long-established temple-centred communities. Fisher associations, labour unions, residents’ welfare groups, and temple committees are key opinion shapers.

Geography & Connectivity:

The constituency spans coastal fishing hamlets, dense residential areas, industrial corridors, and port-adjacent zones. It is connected by the suburban railway, arterial roads, and bus networks linking North and Central Chennai.

Core Issues:

Key challenges include industrial pollution and air quality, coastal erosion, flooding due to inadequate stormwater drainage, poor sanitation, drinking water reliability, traffic congestion from heavy vehicles, and limited public healthcare capacity. Expanded concerns include health impacts of emissions, lack of buffer zones between industry and housing, overcrowded hospitals, limited open spaces, women’s safety, drainage encroachment, and disaster preparedness.

Voter Mood:

Thiruvottiyur is an issue-driven, performance-focused constituency with a strong working-class and migrant presence. Fisherfolk prioritize livelihood and coastal safety, industrial workers value job security and transport access, residents seek clean surroundings and basic services, women stress safety and lighting, and the elderly depend on accessible healthcare.

While 22 MLAs from the AIADMK camp led by Edappadi K Palaniswami voted against the government, 25 MLAs from the rebel CV Shanmugam faction backed Vijay. Four Pattali Makkal Katchi MLAs and one BJP legislator abstained from voting. Vijay's Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) government had been formed with support from the Congress, Left parties, VCK and IUML. An AMMK MLA had also extended support before being expelled from the party. The Assembly proceedings witnessed high drama as infighting within the AIADMK spilled into the open. Tensions escalated after the Speaker invited rebel AIADMK leader SP Velumani to speak, triggering protests from the EPS camp, which repeatedly called for unity within the party ahead of the trust vote. Tamil Nadu Government Formation Highlights: DMK congratulates Vijay on forming government in Tamil Nadu

Tamil Nadu Government Formation News Highlights: The uncertainty over government formation in Tamil Nadu has come to an end after the VCK extended unconditional support to the TVK. Moreover, the IUML also extended its support to the Vijay-led party. Earlier in the day, AMMK leader TTV Dhinakaran challenged TVK’s claim of securing his party’s support, demanding the original letter allegedly submitted to the Governor. He said AMMK MLA S Kamraj denied authorising such support and accused TVK of relying on a photocopied document, with a police complaint already filed. Kamraj further dismissed a video released by Vijay-led TVK as AI-generated. Meanwhile, a TVK supporter allegedly attempted self-immolation demanding Vijay become Chief Minister, prompting BJP leader Tamilisai Soundararajan to urge Vijay to calm supporters. Simultaneously, AIADMK MLAs met Edappadi K Palaniswami in Chennai, while Congress legislators remained camped in Hyderabad amid continuing political uncertainty.
