Virugampakkam Assembly Constituency

Virugambakkam, located in western Chennai, sits close to the iconic Vadapalani Murugan Temple and the bustling Vadapalani film district, often regarded as the capital zone of Tamil cinema, with many film studios, theatres and cinema personalities residing in and around the area. A fully urban constituency surrounded by KK Nagar, Saligramam, Koyambedu, Vadapalani and Valasaravakkam, it represents the everyday life of middle-class Chennai where civic services, transport efficiency and quality of life largely shape political sentiment. Voters here are issue-driven, performance-focused and quick to assess representatives based on visible governance.

Political & Social Character

The electorate comprises salaried professionals, traders, apartment residents, migrants and small businesses. Caste exists but civic performance matters more. RWAs and traders’ bodies influence opinion, and MLA accessibility, grievance response and GCC coordination play a key role.

Geography & Connectivity

Characterised by packed streets and limited open space, the constituency enjoys strong city connectivity. However, daily life is affected by congestion, parking shortage, road width limits and uneven pedestrian access.

HOTSPOTS

  • Vadapalani Murugan temple, Nexus Mall, long arterial Arcot Road, residential interiors, iconic AVM and Prasad Studios.
  • Actor-politician Vijayakanth's residence is here. TVK leader Vijay too lived here before moving to OMR.

CORE ISSUES

Flooding, congestion, water reliability, sewage/waste handling, poor roads, weak pedestrian safety, power stability and encroachments.

VOTER MOOD

  • Apartments: water, drainage, waste, safety
  • Professionals: smooth commute, reliable services
  • Traders: parking, road access
  • Women: lighting, safety, transport
  • Senior citizens: walkability, healthcare, cleanliness

Tamil Nadu CM Floor Test Highlights: Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Vijay comfortably won the floor test on Wednesday, securing support from 144 MLAs after the DMK staged a walkout, bringing down the effective majority mark to 88 from 117. While 22 MLAs from the AIADMK camp led by Edappadi K Palaniswami voted against the government, 25 MLAs from the rebel CV Shanmugam faction backed Vijay. Four Pattali Makkal Katchi MLAs and one BJP legislator abstained from voting. Vijay's Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) government had been formed with support from the Congress, Left parties, VCK and IUML. An AMMK MLA had also extended support before being expelled from the party. The Assembly proceedings witnessed high drama as infighting within the AIADMK spilled into the open. Tensions escalated after the Speaker invited rebel AIADMK leader SP Velumani to speak, triggering protests from the EPS camp, which repeatedly called for unity within the party ahead of the trust vote. Tamil Nadu Government Formation Highlights: DMK congratulates Vijay on forming government in Tamil Nadu

Tamil Nadu Government Formation News Highlights: The uncertainty over government formation in Tamil Nadu has come to an end after the VCK extended unconditional support to the TVK. Moreover, the IUML also extended its support to the Vijay-led party. Earlier in the day, AMMK leader TTV Dhinakaran challenged TVK’s claim of securing his party’s support, demanding the original letter allegedly submitted to the Governor. He said AMMK MLA S Kamraj denied authorising such support and accused TVK of relying on a photocopied document, with a police complaint already filed. Kamraj further dismissed a video released by Vijay-led TVK as AI-generated. Meanwhile, a TVK supporter allegedly attempted self-immolation demanding Vijay become Chief Minister, prompting BJP leader Tamilisai Soundararajan to urge Vijay to calm supporters. Simultaneously, AIADMK MLAs met Edappadi K Palaniswami in Chennai, while Congress legislators remained camped in Hyderabad amid continuing political uncertainty.
