Live Results

Azhikode Assembly Constituency

The Assembly constituency of Azhikode is situated in the Kannur district of southern Kerala. It is included in the Kannur Lok Sabha constituency for national parliamentary elections. Azhikode, which was founded in 1977, is shown on the state assembly map as Constituency No. 10 and is a general seat. It is renowned for its broad electorate and political competition, and it has a mix of coastal towns and semi-urban and rural panchayats.

Administrative and Geographical Organisation

The Kannur district's inland and coastal regions are included in the Azhikode constituency, which is situated along the Malabar Coast. According to the Election Commission of India's 2021 statistical report, Azhikode has 181,838 registered voters, including roughly 84,505 men, 97,331 women, and two voters of the third gender. In the 2021 assembly election, 79.85% of voters cast ballots. The constituency consists of Azhikode, Chirakkal, Narath, Pallikkunnu, Pappinisseri, Puzhathi and Valapattanam Panchayats in Kannur Taluk.

Demographics and Participation in Elections

With a comparatively high percentage of female voters and significant civic engagement, Azhikode's electorate reflects the larger demographic trends in northern Kerala. With about 79.8% of voters participating in the 2021 elections, it has historically experienced high turnout, which is consistent with Kerala's reputation for strong democratic engagement. Coastal fishing villages, traders, professionals, and agricultural workers make up the constituency's social fabric. Malabar customs and maritime livelihoods have greatly influenced the local culture.

Representation and Political History

The political history of Azhikode has been dynamic. The Communist Party of India (Marxist) [CPI(M)] frequently won elections from the time of its founding in 1977 until the early 2000s, demonstrating the robust basis of left politics in the area. However, from the 2000s onwards, they alternated representation in different election cycles; the Indian Union Muslim League (IUML), an ally in the United Democratic Front (UDF), became a formidable rival.

In 2011 and 2016, Azhikode was represented by K. M. Shaji (IUML), narrowly winning both elections. He won by a narrow margin of 493 votes in 2011 and 2,287 votes in 2016. Leaders of the CPI(M), such as M Prakasan Master, have previously held the position.

Results of the 2021 Kerala Assembly Election

The official statistics report from the Election Commission states that the 2021 Kerala Assembly election in Azhikode was a very competitive three-cornered battle. With 65,794 votes, K. V. Sumesh of the Communist Party of India (Marxist) defeated K. M. Shaji of the Indian Union Muslim League (IUML), who received 59,653 votes. With 15,741 votes, K. Ranjith of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) came in third. Overall, the CPI(M) candidate won by a margin of 6,141 votes, or roughly 4.24% of all votes cast.

The Economic and Sociocultural Environment

The social landscape of Azhikode is influenced by Malabar and coastal customs. The main source of income for the locals is fishing and other maritime trades. Additionally, small-scale industries and trade support the local economy. Hindu, Muslim, and Christian communities make up the constituency's electorate, and cultural life is infused with coastal customs.
