Kottakkal Assembly Constituency

Kottakkal state legislative assembly constituency is located in the Malappuram district of Kerala. It is part of the Ponnani Lok Sabha constituency for parliamentary elections, and is the Constituency No. 46 in the 140 seats in the Kerala state legislative assembly. Kottakkal, which was created in its current configuration after the delimitation in 2008, has become a bastion of the Indian Union Muslim League (IUML) within the United Democratic Front (UDF) alliance.

Local Governance and Geography

The Kottakkal Assembly constituency is located in Tirur Taluk of Malappuram district. The combination of rural and municipal local bodies enhances its socioeconomic diversity. It includes Edayoor, Irimbiliyam, Kottakkal, Kuttippuram, Marakkara, Ponmala and Valanchery Panchayatsin Tirur Taluk. The town of Kottakkal is well-known for its cultural and economic significance, especially for the renowned Arya Vaidya Sala, an Ayurvedic medical centre that supports the local economy and identity.

Socioeconomic and Demographic Background

The majority of people in the constituency are Muslims, while there are also smaller Christian and Hindu communities. High literacy, significant remittances from foreign workers (particularly in Gulf nations), a reliance on agriculture and small-scale trade, and a robust presence of healthcare and education-related service sectors are all characteristics of northern Kerala's socioeconomic structure

Voter Participation and the Electorate

Kottakkal had 216518 registered voters for the 2021 Kerala Assembly election, according to data from the Election Commission of India and had a high voter turnout of roughly 77.86%. In the former elections, such as those in 2011, 2016, and 2021, the number of registered voters has grown together with consistently high turnout, demonstrating strong civic involvement.

Political Trends and History

The Kottakkal Assembly constituency has been a bastion of the Indian Union Muslim League (IUML) since its official establishment in 2008. In every assembly election held here, the IUML, in partnership with the United Democratic Front (UDF), has won the seat. Since delimitation, in 2011, M. P. Abdussamad Samadani (IUML) won the newly established seat in its inaugural election. In 2016, Samadani was replaced by K. K. Abid Hussain Thangal (IUML), who easily maintained UDF dominance.

Results of the 2021 Kerala Assembly Election

According to the official findings of the Election Commission, Prof. K. K. Abid Hussain Thangal of the Indian Union Muslim League (IUML), who ran under the United Democratic Front (UDF) banner, won the election in 2021. With 81,700 votes, he received roughly 51.08 percent of the legitimate votes cast. With 65,112 votes, N. A. Muhammed Kutty (Mammuty) of the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP), which is affiliated with the Left Democratic Front (LDF), came in second. With a margin of victory of 16,588 votes, IUML had a sizable advantage in this election. P. P. Ganesan, a candidate for the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), participated in the contest as well. He received 10,796 votes (about 6.75 percent), indicating a smaller but noticeable NDA presence in the constituency.

Voter Behaviour and Electoral Dynamics

Kottakkal's electoral dynamics show a combination of coalition politics, local leadership appeal, and party loyalty. Deep community ties and organizational strength inside the UDF framework, especially in the demographically advantageous areas of the Malappuram district, are the foundation of IUML's domination. The Left Democratic Front (LDF) has consistently challenged the IUML, frequently through NCP candidates, but in recent cycles, its vote percentage has fallen well short of the IUML's base.
