Payyanur assembly constituency is situated in the northern Malabar region's Kannur district. It is included in the Kasaragod Lok Sabha constituency for national parliamentary elections and is designated as Assembly Constituency No. 6 of the 140 constituencies in the Kerala Legislative Assembly. It is a general seat that was founded in 1957.

T. I. Madhusoodanan of the Communist Party of India (Marxist) [CPI(M)] won the 2021 Kerala Legislative Assembly election in Payyanur with 93,695 votes, or 62.49% of the total vote. M. Pradeep Kumar of the Indian National Congress (INC) trailed him with 43,915 votes (29.29%), while Adv. K. K. Sreerharan of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) finished third with 11,308 votes (7.55%). T. I. Madhusoodanan won the election overall with a commanding margin of around 49,780 votes, demonstrating the Payyanur constituency's strong and broad support for the CPI(M) and the Left Democratic Front (LDF).
