Tirurangadi Assembly Constituency

Tirurangadi Assembly Constituency is situated in the Malappuram district in Kerala. It is designated as Constituency No. 43 of the 140 seats in the Kerala Legislative Assembly and is a general or unreserved seat. For parliamentary elections, Tirurangadi is a part of the Ponnani Lok Sabha constituency. Since its founding in 1957, the constituency has had a lengthy election history and has consistently supported the United Democratic Front (UDF) and the Indian Union Muslim League (IUML).

Local Governance and Geography

The Tirurangadi Assembly constituency is located in the coastal and semi-urban areas of the Malappuram district. It includes Edarikode, Nannambra, Parappanangadi, Thennala and Tirurangadi Panchayats in Tirurangadi Taluk and Perumanna Clari Panchayat in Tirur Taluk. Small-scale trade, fishing, agriculture, and service industries dominate the region's economy, and a sizable percentage of households rely on remittances from Gulf-based foreign workers.

Voter Participation and the Electorate

Tirurangadi has 197,158 registered voters, with a roughly equal mix of male and female voters, according to the Election Commission of India's official statistics report for the 2021 Kerala Assembly election. 75.07% of voters cast ballots, indicating a high level of civic involvement.

Representation and Political History

The constituency has demonstrated strong organisational roots in the area by producing leaders from the Indian Union Muslim League (IUML) since its creation. IUML  candidates like P. K. Abdu Rabb and K. P. A. Majeed have represented the constituency in recent decades. Even while the IUML/UDF has won the majority of elections, independent candidates backed by the Left Democratic Front (LDF) have occasionally garnered sizable vote shares.

Results of the 2021 Kerala Assembly Election

K. P. A. Majeed of the Indian Union Muslim League (IUML) won the Tirurangadi seat in the 2021 Kerala Legislative Assembly election, confirming the party's significant influence in the area. As per the official results of the Election Commission, K. P. A. Majeed (IUML, UDF) won with 73,499 votes, followed by Niyas Pulikkalakath, an independent candidate backed by the LDF with 63,921 votes. Kalliyath Sathar Haji of BJP, NDA received 8,314 votes. K. P. A. Majeed won the constituency with a margin of 9,578 votes, or roughly 6.51% of the total valid votes cast. This outcome demonstrated continued voter trust in the IUML's leadership and confirmed the organisation's strength in Tirurangadi.

Voter Behaviour and Electoral Dynamics

The IUML has been able to sustain a steady vote base. However, the constituency's voters are receptive to alternatives when local leadership aligns with community needs, as evidenced by the good performance of independent candidates like Niyas Pulikkalakath in 2021. Even though it is very small, the BJP's presence indicates multiparty participation.

Socioeconomic Context

A combination of urban and semi-urban inhabitants make up Tirurangadi's socioeconomic profile, which is heavily influenced by trade, services, agriculture, and remittances from foreign workers.
