Udma Assembly Election Results 2026

Live Results

Udma Assembly Constituency

Situated in Kerala's northern Kasaragod district, Udma is a crucial legislative assembly constituency in Kerala.  Six grama panchayats, including Bedadka, Chemnad, Delampady, Kuttikol, Muliyar, and Udma, together form the Udma Assembly Constituency. This constituency has no reservation status. Udma includes coastal, midland, and inland rural-semi-urban areas.

Administrative and Voting Profile

According to data from the 15th Kerala Assembly, the total registered electorate for the 2021 Assembly election was 214,209. The total electorate for the 2016 Kerala Assembly election was roughly 199,962, indicating consistent growth in the voter list over subsequent election cycles. As part of a national effort to eliminate out-of-date entries, the voter list underwent a Special Intensive Revision (SIR) in late 2025, ahead of the 2026 assembly elections. Due to these changes, 8,917 electors, including those who had passed away, migrated, or were untraceable, were eliminated from the voter list.

Representation and Political History

After delimitation, Udma was created as a constituency in 1977, giving it a lengthy electoral history. Although it has been represented by a number of political parties and independent leaders over the years, in recent decades it has tended to lean left.

Results of the 2021Assembly Election

C. H. Kunhambu (CPI(M)) won the most recent general assembly election in 2021 with 78,664 votes, or roughly 47.58% of the total. With 65,342 votes, Periya Balakrishnan (INC) was the primary runner-up. About 20,360 votes were cast for A. Velayudhan (BJP). CPI (M) won by a margin of 13,322 votes. Although the tussle has remained close between the Left Democratic Front (LDF) and the United Democratic Front (UDF), especially the CPI(M) and Congress, this outcome showed Udma's comparatively strong left-leaning trend.

Historical Patterns

The seat was consistently represented by CPI(M) candidates for numerous terms in the 2000s and 2010s. K. Kunhiraman served multiple terms in a row before the current tenure of C.H. Kunhambu.

Voter Participation and Turnout

While exact turnout rates for Udma's elections vary from year to year, Uduma has historically had high voter turnout relative to national norms. For instance, the state-wide turnout for the 2021 Kerala Legislative Assembly election was approximately 76%, with strong electoral participation in numerous constituencies. Particularly in Udma, voter turnout has consistently been at or above average state levels, suggesting a motivated electorate in the area.

Participation in the Parliament Elections

Udma is one of the seven assembly segments that make up the Kasaragod Lok Sabha constituency. Rajmohan Unnithan, the Indian National Congress candidate, won the parliamentary seat in the 2024 General Election, indicating a fierce multi-party battle in the larger Kasaragod region.

Crucial Issues and Important Hotspots

  • Inadequate infrastructure and underdevelopment
  • Udma and the larger Kasaragod district are frequently mentioned as being behind other districts in Kerala on important development metrics. Poor local transportation connections and road connectivity, particularly in outer rural wards, is one of the main problems. The inadequate health infrastructure, which forces many inhabitants to seek vital medical treatment outside the region, is another significant problem.
  • Conflicts  involving Land, Environment, and Coastal Rights
  • Udma includes sensitive environmental zones and coastal settlements where land title conflicts, CRZ (Coastal Regulation Zone) regulations, and demolition or development notices have surfaced in recent years.

Major hotspots

  • Bekal Fort
  • Chandragiri Fort
  • Kappil Beach
  • Valiyaparamba Backwaters
