Kozhikode North Assembly Constituency

Kozhikode North legislative assembly constituency is situated in the Kozhikode district of Kerala. It forms an important component of the Kozhikode Lok Sabha constituency for national parliamentary elections and is the 27th of the 140 seats in the Kerala Legislative Assembly.

Administrative and Geographical Profile

From 1957 to 2008, Kozhikode North was known as Calicut-I. It was created in its current form after the 2008 delimitation. The Kozhikode Municipal Corporation's urban wards No.1 to 16, 39, 40, 42 to 51 are included in this constituency. It is a general or unreserved seat. The seat is a significant voting segment in northern Kerala due to its mix of urban residential, commercial, and peri-urban districts. The electorate in Kozhikode North is representative of the city's varied socioeconomic makeup, which includes professionals, traders, students, and employees in the service industry.

Voter Participation and the Electorate

Kozhikode North has 180,909 registered voters for the 2021 Assembly election, with a virtually equal number of male and female voters, according to the Election Commission of India's official statistics report. The constituency's voter turnout in the 2021 election was approximately 75.98%, which is in line with Kerala's history of high turnout.

Legislative Representation and Political History

Leaders of the Communist Party of India (Marxist) [CPI(M)] have continuously represented Kozhikode North Assembly Constituency since the post-delimitation reorganisation, demonstrating the Left Democratic Front's (LDF) enduring presence in the area. A. Pradeep Kumar of the CPI(M) was elected as the MLA from the newly renamed constituency in the 2011 Assembly election. His successful retention of the seat in 2016 further solidified left support. Thottathil Ravindran of the CPI(M) won the 2021 election, guaranteeing the LDF's continued representation in Kozhikode North

Abhijith of the Indian National Congress (UDF) came in second with 46,196 votes, or around 33.58 percent, while M. T. Ramesh of the Bharatiya Janata Party (NDA) came in third with 30,952 votes, or roughly 22.50 percent. Nota garnered 516 votes, or roughly 0.38 percent of the total, with smaller party and independent candidates receiving lesser shares.

Voter Behaviour and Electoral Trends

Since its re-designation, the Kozhikode North Assembly Constituency's electoral history shows a distinct pattern of political movements. Since then, the Communist Party of India (Marxist) [CPI(M)] has won every election, demonstrating significant organisational depth, successful grassroots mobilisation, and enduring voter loyalty. Meanwhile, the Indian National Congress (INC)-led United Democratic Front (UDF) has continued to be the main opponent, consistently winning a sizable portion of the vote and guaranteeing fiercely contested elections. Though they still lag behind the two main fronts, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) have also seen a steady rise in vote share in recent years, reflecting a larger pattern of BJP expansion in urban areas throughout Kerala.
