Ponnani Assembly Election Results 2026

Live Results

Ponnani Assembly Constituency

Ponnani Assembly Constituency is located in the Malappuram district of Kerala. It is ranked 48th out of 140 Kerala Legislative Assembly constituencies. It is a well-known coastal seat in northern Kerala that combines historical significance, socioeconomic traits, and lively electoral politics. It is one of the seven assembly segments that comprise the Ponnani Lok Sabha constituency.

Administrative Structure and Geography

Both urban and rural areas make up Ponnani's electoral territory, which is situated near the mouth of the Bharathapuzha (Nila) River on the Arabian Sea coast. According to the Delimitation of Parliamentary and Assembly Constituencies Order, 2008, Ponnani assembly constituency includes Ponnani Municipality and Alamcode, Maranchery, Nannamukku, Perumpadappa and Veliyankode Panchayats in Ponnani Taluk.

Because of Ponnani's long history of Islamic scholarship, Ponnani town, which has long been acknowledged as an important port and educational hub, is sometimes referred to as the "Little Mecca of Malabar." In line with general patterns in the Malappuram district, the population makeup consists of a Muslim majority, followed by Hindus, and a small Christian minority.

Voter Participation and the Electorate

The Ponnani seat registered 205353 voters in the 2021 Kerala Assembly election, including 99,549 male voters, 105,802 female voters, and a tiny number of third-gender voters, according to data from the Election Commission of India. Of these, 145,590 ballots were cast, yielding a voter turnout of 70.9%, a high level of participation indicative of Kerala's democratic engagement. The electorate's consistent rise from over 158,680 in 2011 to over 205,000 by 2021 is indicative of the region's continued political engagement and population expansion.

Political Background

Ponnani has a long and illustrious electoral history. The Indian Union Muslim League (IUML), a member of the United Democratic Front (UDF), has historically dominated the region. But the Left Democratic Front (LDF), especially the Communist Party of India (Marxist) [CPI(M)], has gained a lot of ground in the last few decades. P. Sreeramakrishnan (CPI(M)) defeated the Indian National Congress (INC) nominee for the Ponnani seat in the 2016 Kerala Legislative Assembly election by a wide majority. This result highlighted shifting political dynamics in a constituency that was previously thought to be a UDF stronghold.

2021 Assembly Election result

In keeping with the change that P Sreeramakrishnan brought to the constituency, P. Nandakumar (CPI(M)) won the seat in 2021 with 74,668 votes or about 51.35% vote share, defeating Adv. A. M. Rohith (INC) with 57,625 votes or about 39.63% vote share. With a victory margin of 17,043 votes or roughly 11.74% of all valid votes cast, Nandakumar solidified the LDF's hold on the seat.

Socioeconomic Features

Ponnani integrates agricultural and coastal economies. In addition to agriculture, especially the production of coconuts, paddy, and areca nuts, traditional livelihoods are centred on fishing, which is aided by Ponnani's harbour and marine resources. Despite the demise of some historic sectors, such as beedi manufacturing, the local economy still includes coir production and related small industries. The remittances from foreign workers also have a big economic impact.

Voter Behaviour and Electoral Dynamics

The LDF's victories in recent elections demonstrate a voter base receptive to more expansive policy platforms and candidate appeal, whereas the IUML and the UDF have traditionally garnered support through community networks and development narratives. Voters in Ponnani are actively supporting both major fronts, as seen by competitive margins, especially in 2016 and 2021.
