Ottapalam Assembly Constituency

Ottapalam Assembly Constituency is the 52nd seat of the 140 seats in the Kerala Legislative Assembly. It is in the Palakkad district and is a part of the Palakkad Lok Sabha constituency for the national parliamentary representation.

Administrative Structure and Geography

The Ottappalam Municipality and Ambalapara, Kadampazhipuram, Karimpuzha, Lakkidi-Perur, Pookkottukavu, Sreekrishnapuram and Thachanattukara Panchayats in Ottappalam Taluk are included in the constituency.

Voter Participation and the Electorate

There were 208304 registered voters in the 2021 Kerala Legislative Assembly election in Ottapalam. There were roughly 100,429 male electors and 107,871 female electors, as well as a very few number of electors of the third gender. A total of 160,294 legitimate votes were cast, and 77.54 percent of voters cast the ballots.

Political Background and Representation

Over the years, Ottapalam has been a competitive electoral battlefield where the United Democratic Front (UDF), primarily led by the Indian National Congress (INC), and the Left Democratic Front (LDF), especially the Communist Party of India (Marxist) [CPI(M)], have both won elections at different points. The LDF did well in the 2016 Kerala Assembly election when P. Unni of the CPI(M) defeated Adv. Shanimol Osman of the INC by a margin of 16,088 votes.

Results of the 2021 Assembly Election Results

Adv. K. Premkumar of the CPI(M) was able to keep the Ottapalam seat for the LDF in the 2021 Assembly election. The official results from the Election Commission show that Dr P. Sarin of the INC (UDF) received 59,707 votes or about 37.05% of the total votes, and Premkumar received 74,859 votes or about 46.45%. Premkumar won by a majority of 15,152 votes, or around 9.43% of all valid votes cast. P. Venugopal, the BJP (NDA) candidate, also received a sizable portion of the vote, demonstrating the party's expanding prominence.

Voter Behaviour and Electoral Trends

Vigorous competition between major coalitions and a politically conscious electorate demarcates Ottapalam in the political sphere of Kerala.  The CPI(M) and its allies have maintained considerable organizational strength over the past few decades, winning numerous elections and frequently obtaining comfortable margins, particularly during cycles in which the Left front has performed well statewide. Here, the UDF and INC have also been competitive, garnering vote shares that are representative of front-level campaign tactics, candidate profiles, and local issues. The degree to which parties mobilise voters around social welfare and development issues has often determined the margin of victory in elections. Even though they are not dominant, the BJP and its allies have drawn a growing number of votes, especially among the younger people. This tendency has been observed in a number of other semi-urban constituencies across Kerala.

Socioeconomic Features

In spite of changing times, agriculture is still a major economic activity in the constituency's rural areas. Paddy, coconut, banana, and vegetable farming are still important. A large part of the population is also involved in trade, service industry and education as well. The contribution of remittances from foreign workers, especially those from Gulf nations, is also noteworthy.
