Mankada Assembly Constituency

Mankada Assembly Constituency is located in the Malappuram district of Kerala. It is included in the Malappuram Lok Sabha constituency for national parliamentary elections and is recognized as Constituency No. 39 of the 140 seats in the Kerala Legislative Assembly. The Indian Union Muslim League (IUML) within the United Democratic Front (UDF) is one of the major political fronts that has a strong organisational presence in the constituency, which has been a significant electoral segment in northern Kerala.

Local Governance and Geography

A combination of rural and semi-urban areas makes up the Mankada Assembly constituency, which is located in the northern portion of Malappuram district. Angadippuram, Koottilangadi, Kuruva, Makkaraparamba, Mankada, Moorkkanad and Puzhakkattiri Panchayats in Perinthalmanna Taluk are included in the constituency.

Voter Participation and the Electorate

Mankada has 218,774 registered voters for the 2021 Kerala Legislative Assembly election, according to the official statistical report from the Election Commission of India. The constituency recorded a voter turnout of almost 77.32 percent, demonstrating strong civic participation, with nearly equal numbers of male and female electors. The majority of the people in the constituency are Muslims, and a sizeable Hindu and Christian communities.

Political Background and History

Mankada has been represented by a variety of political leaders and parties since it was created for the first Kerala Legislative Assembly elections in 1957, however the IUML and UDF have dominated its electoral history for the most part. There has periodically been fierce competition in the constituency, especially from the Communist Party of India (Marxist) [CPI(M)] inside the Left Democratic Front (LDF), especially in hotly contested elections like those in 2016 and 2021. T. A. Ahammed Kabeer (IUML) gained the seat in the 2011 election. Kabeer won the seat again in 2016, albeit by a smaller margin, highlighting the growing level of competition.

Results of the 2021 Kerala Assembly Election

Mankada's political importance and competitive nature were confirmed in the 2021 Kerala Legislative Assembly election. Manjalamkuzhi Ali of the Indian Union Muslim League (IUML, UDF) received 83,231 votes, or around 49.46 percent of all valid votes cast, according to the Election Commission's official figures. Adv. T. K. Rasheedali of the Communist Party of India (Marxist) [CPI(M)] [representing the LDF], his principal opponent, garnered 76,985 votes, or approximately 45.75 percent. Sajesh Elayil, the candidate of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), received 6,641 votes (about 3.95 percent). Manjalamkuzhi Ali's victory margin of 6,246 votes, or roughly 3.72 percent of the total votes cast, demonstrated how fiercely competitive the campaign was and how the IUML was able to hold onto its lead despite a formidable CPI(M) opposition.

Voter Behaviour and Electoral Dynamics

Mankada's election dynamics exhibit a combination of front-based rivalry, individual candidate recognition, and party loyalty. Under the UDF banner, IUML has traditionally maintained a strong voting base thanks to its long history and organisational strength in the area. However, by reducing margins and successfully mobilising local problems among some segments of the population, the LDF, and especially CPI(M), has occasionally contested this supremacy. This has led to fiercely contested elections in recent cycles, particularly in 2016 and 2021, when the CPI(M) candidate greatly increased the left vote share, demonstrating an active and astute voter base. Even while it hasn't emerged as a clear contender in Mankada, the BJP's involvement, despite its small vote percentage, shows the existence of a multiparty environment.
