Mananthavady (St) Assembly Constituency

Mananthavady, which is situated in the Wayanad district in northern Kerala, is assigned as Constituency No. 17 in the Kerala state legislative assembly. In national parliamentary elections, it is a part of the Wayanad Lok Sabha constituency. Senior Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi represents the constituency in parliament. Mananthavady is a Scheduled Tribe (ST) reserved seat, which reflects the region's demographic makeup.

Administrative and Geographical Profile

Mananthavady is located in the Wayanad district's predominantly rural, tribal area, which is distinguished by mountainous terrain, forest tracts, and agricultural landscapes. The constituency, which had previously been called North Waynad, was created in its current shape after the delimitation.

The constituency had 195,326 registered voters, according to the Election Commission of India's 2021 statistical report. Kerala has a long history of high levels of civic involvement, as seen by the 78.33% voter turnout of 152,994 people in the 2021 election.

Edavaka, Mananthavady, Panamaram, Thavinhal, Thirunelly, Thondernad, and Vellamunda Panchayats in Mananthavady Taluk are the local self-government segments that make up Mananthavady assembly constituency.

The Sociocultural Environment

Numerous Scheduled Tribe communities, including Kurichiya, Adiyan, and Paniya, make up a sizable portion of the constituency's population, which affects local concerns and representation. Here, political debates frequently revolve around problems such as rural infrastructure, forest access, land rights, and tribal welfare.
Mananthavady's main economic activities are agriculture and plantation labour; in the mountainous regions, pepper, coffee, and cardamom are frequently grown.

Political History

The Left Democratic Front (LDF) and the United Democratic Front (UDF) have historically been the main rivals in Mananthavady, with the Indian National Congress (INC) and the Communist Party of India (Marxist) [CPI(M)] playing significant roles.

The first MLA for the newly formed constituency was P. K. Jayalakshmi (INC), who won the seat in 2011. O. R. Kelu (CPI(M)) defeated Jayalakshmi by a slim margin of 1,307 votes in the 2016 election, demonstrating the growth of LDF support in the constituency.

Results of the 2021 Kerala Assembly Election

The Left Democratic Front (LDF) emerged victorious in the 2021 Kerala Legislative Assembly election in Mananthavady. P. K. Jayalakshmi of the Indian National Congress received 63,254 votes (about 41.46%), while current minister O. R. Kelu of the Communist Party of India (Marxist) received 72,536 votes (around 47.54%). Palliyara Mukundan of the BJP came in third place with 13,142 votes (about 8.62%), followed by Babitha Sreenu of the SDPI with 1,992 votes (around 1.31%); NOTA and other candidates received a minor portion of the vote.

By winning the seat by a margin of 9,282 votes, or around 6.1% of the total votes cast, Kelu successfully retained the constituency after winning it in 2016 and confirmed the growing power of the CPI(M) and the LDF in Mananthavady.

Voter Behaviour and Electoral Trends

The electoral history of Mananthavady reveals a competitive dynamic between the LDF and UDF. The CPI(M) was able to reverse the INC's 2011 victory in 2016 and solidify its position by 2021. This change demonstrates how sensitive the constituency is to both local concerns like socioeconomic growth, rural infrastructure, and tribal welfare, as well as more general state political currents.
