Kalpetta Assembly Constituency

Located in the Wayanad district in northern Kerala, the Kalpetta Assembly Constituency is designated as Constituency No. 19 and is included in the Wayanad Lok Sabha constituency for national parliamentary elections. Senior Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi represents the constituency in parliament. Kalpetta was founded in 1965 and has a lengthy electoral history. Over the years, it has been represented by a number of significant political parties. It has no reservation status.

Geography and Administrative Structure

Kalpetta is located in Wayanad, a region renowned for its picturesque hills, spice plantations, and rich tribal history. Kalpetta Municipality, Kaniambetta, Kottathara, Meppady, Muppainad, Muttil, Padinharethara, Pozhuthana, Thariyode, Vengappally, and Vythiri Panchayats in Vythiri Taluk are the various local self-government sectors that make up the constituency.

Voter Participation and the Electorate

In the 2021 Assembly election, Kalpetta had about 201192 registered voters, with a significant turnout of roughly 75.65%, according to official data. Voter behaviour is further complicated by Wayanad's diverse demographic makeup, which includes permanent agricultural populations, migrants from central and south Kerala who came in search of fertile lands for cultivation of various cash crops, and indigenous tribal tribes.

Political Trends and History

Political fortunes in Kalpetta have fluctuated, with various parties gaining prominence at different times. Previously, candidates from the Indian National Congress (INC) represented the constituency. The region's involvement with smaller political groupings began in 2011 with the victory of M. V. Shreyams Kumar of the Socialist Janata (Democratic) Party. The Communist Party of India (Marxist) [CPI(M)] candidate C. K. Saseendran won a resounding victory in 2016, demonstrating the Left Democratic Front's (LDF) dominance in the constituency at the time. The Indian National Congress candidate T. Siddique won the seat in the 2021 Assembly election, marking a significant shift to the Congress-led United Democratic Front (UDF).

Results of the 2021 Assembly Election

Adv. T. Siddique of the Indian National Congress (INC) won the 2021 Kerala Legislative Assembly election with 70,252 votes, or roughly 46.16 percent of all votes cast. M. V. Shreyams Kumar (LDF) of the Loktantrik Janta Dal (LJD), his closest opponent, received 64,782 votes, or roughly 42.56 percent. T. M. Subeesh, the candidate for the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), came in third place with 14,113 votes, or around 9.27 percent of the total, while NOTA garnered 828 votes, or roughly 0.54 percent. The remaining votes went to independents and small candidates.

Adv. T. Siddique received 5,470 votes, or about 3.60 percent of all votes cast, to win the seat. His win represented a clear UDF victory, suggesting a change in voter preferences since the 2016 election, while the BJP's small vote share demonstrated its increasing influence in the political landscape of the seat.

Socioeconomic Status

Tourism, plantation operations, and agriculture all influence Kalpetta's social and economic environment. Along with coffee and tea plantations, the region's economy mostly depends on the production of spices, especially cardamom and pepper. These agricultural industries contribute to the state's overall economic profile in addition to sustaining local livelihoods.

Another important factor is tourism. Located in the middle of the Western Ghats, Kalpetta is a popular hill station and tourist destination that attracts tourists with its natural beauty, hiking paths, and wildlife.

Additionally, the constituency is home to a variety of communities, including sizable populations of Other Backwards Classes (OBC) and Scheduled Tribes (ST), which have an impact on political agendas and development objectives.
